Turkey-Greece border: Twelve migrants die in freezing conditions

Twelve migrants have died in freezing conditions in Turkey near the country’s border with Greece, with each nation blaming the other for the tragedy.

Turkey accuses Greek border officials of forcing the group back across the border, resulting in their deaths.

Greece fiercely denies that claim.

Myanmar shadow government drops objections to ICJ’s Rohingya genocide case

Myanmar’s shadow government, set up after last year’s military coup, said it accepts the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hear allegations that the country committed genocide against its Rohingya minority.

Before the military seized power last year, Myanmar’s government led by the now-ousted Aung San Suu Kyi had filed preliminary objections to the ICJ over the case brought by the Gambia in a move seen as likely to delay proceedings.

A record number of Americans quit their jobs in 2021

More than 4 million people left their jobs in the United States of America in December. In 2021 alone, 68.9 million quit their jobs, and among them, 47.4 million were voluntary quits while others were laid off.

Google Expands its hold in India

Google’s investment includes a US$700 million equity investment in Airtel at 734 rupees (A$13.99) per share and up to US$300 million towards implementing commercial agreements, including investments in expanding Airtel’s products and services, the companies said.

Conglomerate Reliance Industries’ digital unit Jio Platforms, which houses Airtel’s rival Jio, received a US$4.5 billion investment from Google in July 2020. Months later, the companies launched a low-cost 4G smartphone with a tweaked Android operating system aimed at first-time smartphone buyers.

Facebook lost around 500,000 daily users in the last three months of 2021, Meta’s quarterly earnings report revealed, falling from 1.93 billion logging in around the world each day to 1.929 billion.

BA.2: Omicron sub-variant detected in 57 countries, says WHO

BA.2 is a subvariant of omicron detected in more than 57 countries is more contagious, reported the World Health Organization (WHO). Although it is more infectious, its severity remains unchanged, said an epidemiologist.
